Long Island 1199ers Run Blood Drive

One thing is certain: There is always a need for blood donations.

On February 16, the Long Island headquarters of 1199SEIU and its Funds, located in Hicksville, mounted a blood drive. Helping to make it a good experience for all who participated were 1199SEIU members who work at the New York Blood Center--Tess Marullo-Supervisor, Donor Specialist; George Schefferine, Shantelle Hutchin and Maria Abreu.

Blood captains took the responsibility of signing up volunteers. Daniel Calise of HSII contacted the Union staff and other floors. Charisse Simpson, the Nursing Home administrative assistant, contacted the administrative staff and  building maintenance staffs. 1199SEIU receptionist Janel James receptionist spoke with the union staff and guest. Benefit Fund staffer Lisa Mussman spoke to her co-workers. Rosa Bascoy spoke to co-workers in the Pension, Training and Job Security Funds. And Lucie Meier from VJ Associates spoke to her co-workers and people in neighboring offices about donating blood.

By volunteering to be blood captains and encouraging their co-workers to donate blood, they were able to get fifteen people to volunteer. Eight gave whole blood, two people gave double red cells for a total of twelve units of

blood. Working together as a team, they all helped to make the drive a great success. In 2009, they had three successful blood drives. This was the first of four scheduled blood drives for 2010.
